What We Do

The Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter's mission is to balance the health, safety, and welfare of the people and animals by:

  • protecting the rights of people from the dangers and nuisances caused by uncontrolled animals
  • ensuring the protection of animals from mistreatment
  • promoting and motivating responsible pet ownership

How you can help

Reading Tales to Wagging Tails
A program that allows children in our community to come to the shelter and read to our adoptable animals. Reading aloud to animals can boost literacy skills for children while providing enrichment to the animals. A reading adventure for children of all ages. Children can bring their favorite books or use ours. Parent/guardian supervision is required while readers are on site.
Check out the flyer for more information.

Things To Know

Mom will likely return. Please don't intervene. When we find a litter of kittens, our good-hearted instincts tell us to rush to the aid of these fragile felines. Thankfully, human intervention is typically not required. In fact, the best thing to do is leave the kittens alone. Mom will likely return shortly. It’s critical that the kittens remain in her care, as she offers the best chance for survival. If you find kittens and are extremely certain that they are orphaned, you can then step in and help by caring for the kittens yourself until they’re old enough to find homes. Report the abuse to the Terrebonne Parish Animal Shelter at (985) 873-6709. Come forward as a witness. Without witnesses, it is difficult to prosecute cruelty crimes. We need citizens who are willing to stand up against this senseless act.

A community cat is an unowned cat that lives outdoors. Community cats with a tipped ear, as shown in the below picture, have been spayed/neutered and given immunizations, including FVRCP and rabies. They may be friendly or, in some cases, not socialized with/by people. Don't worry; community cats are already used to living outside and are happier this way.

Who We Are

The Animal Shelter also works in conjunction with local law enforcement for after hour, weekend, and holiday emergencies.

Foster Program

Becoming a foster parent is one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities offered. You can help bridge the gap for animals who may not be able to thrive on their own within the shelter environment, like infant kittens, medical-recovery animals, and shy animals who need some extra TLC, just to name a few! In all cases, the animals benefit from the socialization and in-home living experience, and become much more adoptable.
